Arriving at the Galapagos Islands, April '07

Santa Cruz Bay Anchorage
We stayed in this anchorage in Santa Cruz Bay while we discovered parts of this island walking around on our own and then in a few days we took 2 guided tours to more remote locations. The Galapagos are quite barren and mostly desert in general but strangely the air was moist and cool and the sea was quite cold...I don't know why but we got more mildew there than anyplace else. Learning about the varied, native, tame wildlife was the most interesting part. We walked around the Darwin center in the town area and saw lots of "oooold", slow land tortoises and iguanas. We took a tour of another island, Floriana and a long nature walk with a guide. This also included diving with dolphins and under volcanis remains. Then, on advice of fellow cruisers, we took a tour of the North Seymour area to get other views, especially of birds and sea lions. Unfortunately we missed seeing penguins. The Government limits our freedom to move the boat and anchor other places [saving the ecology there] and we were in a bit of a hurry to get on to French Polynesia. Also, the more involved tours covering several days were quite expensive so we made the decision to move on. This is not to say we didn't find these islands fascinating in their unique way.
