Arriving in New Zealand
Visiting the North Island Nov 07-May 08
Much cooler here, even in summer!!!

Flip thru pix below for overview in no particular order!!
The first thing we did, after docking near Auckland at Gulf Harbour Marina, was to buy a car! We were ready to see the wonderful countryside and we took off every chance we got, from a few days to a week at a time. We either camped, or more often, stayed in "backpacker" lodges. These are not for kids but rather for those folks traveling without frills...just a good bed and clean bath with kitchen available. We met loads of great folks and used the BBH cards for a discount each time.

We visited Tongarero National Park where Chuck was called by nature to take up flyfishing and buy hundreds of dollars worth of gear!!! We hiked to water falls, uncounted! We learned about the flora and fauna at gardens and museums. We learned all about the Maori culture that still influences NZ today. We also camped at Te Urera National Park, saw Rororura, Te Kwiti, Wellington, New Plymouth, Keri Keri, and Bay of Islands area. We loved the art and history museums. Much more comprehensive that one would expect from a country smaller in population than metro Atlanta!!

The slideshow below will give a general idea of why we just love this place. The pix cover the North Island adventures. It really can't be described in words and photos. If a traveler never gets around to coming here then they are cheating themselves!!! We found all of New Zealand to be extraordinary. We can't imagine another place where just every location is so remarkable, colorful and interesting.

Many racehorses are bred here, rivaling Kentucky. Of course there are sheep and cows everwhere. Dairy farming is rapidly replacing sheep farming, but there are still loads of great wool items and yummy lamb.
The landscape looks like it was intentionally designed using all colors especially greens in early spring, November. There are farms, caves, mountains, deserts, rivers, glaciers, fjords, volcanos, steam vents [earth farts], thermal springs, skiing in winter, remarkable crafts, and more coastline than the whole US! The food isn't San Francisco or New Orleans but it's good...hey it's British!!! Good fish and chips and oriental food.
