After spending January in Charleston, we headed just a bit south to Beaufort SC where we used to keep our CAL 25 sailboat years ago. Cygnet,
our Cal, is pictured below since I just found an old photo.
Beaufort is our hailing port and written our boat stern so we consider it our nautical home. We always enjoy staying there. We especially enjoyed a visit from old friends,Alice and Richard, from Atlanta. Many years ago the four of us chartered a 40' boat together in the BVI for 10 days. After we left Beaufort we had an exciting offshore day sail around Hilton Head Island in 30+ knots of wind to Savannah. Old friends Ed and Nancy had been asking us to tie up at their new dock off the Bull River for a while. Since we are so thrifty, we were looking forward to it. This was challenging because the creek their home is on is deep but the entry is shoaled and we had to scout it out with the dinghy to find the deep areas and go in at high tide and stay right in the middle of the narrow creek. We were definitely the largest boat on the neighborhood creek but look at the beautiful pix of their dock and yard below. We even helped them with some landscaping and tree cutting for being such nice hosts for 2 weeks. Chuck had to recuperate from a hernia operation after our physical exams during this time. Other than that we are in fine shape! Thank the Lord! We can keep on goin'!!! Also while Chuck was resting Lynn got some sewing done on Nancy's dock making a riding sail for anchoring to keep the boat pointed into the wind...see her at work below! We did some fine eating in Savannah and in Augusta where we got to see other old friends who keep feeding us so royally!!! After Savannah we set out for Jacksonville and setting up residency in Florida registering the boat, getting drivers license, voters registrations and seeing family. We always enjoy anchoring in the coves along Cumberland. We picked up 11 year old great niece Megan in Fernandina and she sailed with us for a day on into Jax driving the boat through downtown Jax with the big ships going by. |
