We arrived in Tahiti in mid June and we were ready to visit a small city like Pepeete where
we could get some much needed items. The prices were shocking but the food selection
was excellent...those French really know how to eat and drink!!! This place was loaded
with tourists, shops and traffic.
We just weren't used to all that.
We both had recently read "Mutiny on the Bounty" so we visited the home of British author,
James Norman Hall. He was also quite an aviation and war hero and Chuck was impressed. We hiked around
Point Venus where Captain Cook and the Bounty anchored and the missionaries brought Christianity
to the natives. During our voyage to Tahiti we had passed the island purchased by Marlon Brando
when he was making the "Bounty" film years ago.
After some provisioning, repairs and visiting
with friends we decided to take off to the ismus location in this hour glass shaped island, Port
Phaeton. It is more peaceful away from the foul water from the Pepeete airport and all the city
traffic. We visited several anchorage locations passing inside the reef seeing the Tahiti Museum,
Gauguin Museum, and, of course, The Tahiti Botanical Gardens. Lynn needs to visit plants everywhere we go.

There are many canoe racers [called pirogues here] all over the South Pacific and we just had to have
a handmade canoe paddle. We found a paddle maker, Phillipe who is known as the best and bought one of his.
We plan to get a kayak in New Zealand and use it then.
While hitchhiking around the island we also visited several Grottos, caves that were carved from the
volcanic rock and are with flowing, clear water. Swimming is no longer allowed. Darn!!! We love a dip in icewater!!!
On our way to the next island 10 miles away, Moorea, we participated in the Tourisme 2007 Tahiti to Moorea Race and
placed 6th in 19 boats in a "non organized" start...meaning all sizes of boats started at the same time. Not the way
races are done but fun anyway. CYAN performed so much faster than we ever expected passing several
larger boats that were NOT pulling a dingy with a motor like we were! Our local guests were the vice mayer of Pepeete, Marcelle
and his Daughter Teketea. Later, on the Moorea beach, Chuck represented us by rowing in a canoe race with locals and cruisers
and won a nice $200 black pearl from a sponser. The other 2 are the ones we traded $9 of rum for in the Tuamotus.
