Turks and Caicos and The Dominican Republic

We say goodbye to the Bahamas and have our strongest sail yet in 10' seas to the Turks and Caicos a British colony. It wasn't dangerous just very busy!!! During this time our towed dinghy is swamped with water from these waves, goes under, pops back up and we have to stop in big rollers and hoist it up the arch to dump the whole thing out. We decide to get an inflatable ....soon!!! The foldable vinyl Portabote was fine for the coast but hard to assemble on board.

We have a fine time with new friends in Turks...no photos really...not much to shoot there, just nice sea colors. Soon we motor through the wide shallow banks and make an overnight journey to the Domican Republic. Now, here in Lupernon, there is a protected cove with 130 boats, all kinds of great folks and activities, from flea markets to happy hours to field trips going to neighboring festivals.

Below are colorful photos of the Carnival at La Vega, celebrating the Independence Day to beat all!!! At least when it comes to colorful costumes and loud music!!!

We take a few days, leaving the boat, to visit Santa Domingo, 4 hours away by bus. This city was founded by Columbus' family in 1495. We attend mass at the oldest cathedral, Santa Maria...something...in the New World and visit the first monestery and the first paved street, the "Avenue of the Ladies" where ladies would show off their finery. We visited the house of Columbus' son Diago, the Alcazar Cologne. The DR folks are fine people and we enjoyed it here a lot. We also met lots of cruisers who are sailing the same course that we are, towards the Panama Canal in about a year. We look forward to catching up with from time to time along the way south.

We don't linger but push on to Puerto Rico after only a week because the big wedding day for son, Geoff and Marla is coming is less than a month and we don't want to get stuck north of the Mona passage as can sometimes happen.
