Outside Voyage North
...spending summer in New England
Last summer we had so many close calls with hurricanes that we definitely planned to go north this season so we were headed to Maine!
We sailed 2 days and nights often 40-60 miles offshore passing New Jersey and New York and arrived in Block Island, RI, in the fog, slowly making our way through.
We'd been indoctrinated in fog sailing very suddenly the night before. We got caught late Sunday night in the most northern, busy NYC shipping channel
with 3 freighters in the same channel and we were under sail. The drape of fog sank upon us and wiped out all vision while we honked our little foghorn like crazy and
immediately started the engine to get outta there fast! It was exciting for a while, marking the chart as to each vessel's location and proximity to us. A fast lesson about
how to sail in fog conditions. All these captains, with international accents, on the radio trying to figure out how not to hit us and here we were watching the radar for
where they were and talking to them about where we were headed. The sea had been very soft with a warm southern breeze over the cool water of the coast that results in that pesky
the famous New England summer fog.
After a few days rest in Block Island, we headed, still in fog, to Padanaram, MA, a small, historic sailing town to anchor a few days and begin to enjoy New England.
We then sailed up Buzzards Bay on a perfect, clear day, through the Cape Cod Canal and 40 more miles on to Provincetown, MA for July 4th weekend.

We left P'town and sailed offshore about 2/3 way up the coast of Maine, just south of Mt Desert, to a remote fishing island called Long Island.
The only town there, of 300 year-around residents, is called Frenchboro and it's economy is almost exclusively based on lobster
and crab trapping. It was Chuck's favorite place in Maine and so scenic with few tourists or cruisers...like stepping back in time.
