On to the Rest of Maine
...setting off to discover the charm!

We sailed to Swans Island and anchored there over the one saturday night that the only store on the whole island burned down...we could see all the smoke. That was a big story in the Maine news. The weather was too rough to dinghy to shore so we just viewed the harbor from the boat and had a rest.
We later anchored across the channel in Lynn's favorite place, Winter Harbor cove on Vinalhaven Island,a narrow cove with rock cliffs and clear water. When we anchored in Maine we liked to drive around in the dinghy and discover wonderful, serene creek banks and walking trails off the water. We would take wine and cheese and have happy hour picnics on the rocks and take walks in the wooded locations away from towns.
After Winter Harbor Cove, we anchored for 2 days in North Haven village in Fox Island thoroughfare...a cut-through the island group. We were always ready to take long walk for exercise and get to know the locale and the local folks. We were curious as to why so many folks chose to move to several of the remote Maine island locations. We met Innkeepers, quilt makers, artists, teachers, missionaries, lobstermen, cooks, students....all these folks made for interesting conversation.

After visiting several islands, we were ready for provisioning and laundry so we visited Castine, a lovely and very old historic village. This was the site of a naval battle among other complicated historical events there...too many history signs to read...Chuck loved them but I got confused!!! I mostly remember the award winning lobster roll there...the best in Maine. We agreed.

We stopped in Searsport on our way to Rockland and visited the huge Maritine Historical Museum there. We had to spend some time, 2 weeks, in Rockland due to Chuck having to go to NC on business. While we were there we enjoyed a wonderful visit by close friends from Atlanta, the McCareys: Bernie, Jill, Heather and Jill's brother, Jack. The McCareys have heard us planning this adventure for over 20 years and wanted to check out our new life.
We sailed across the channel to Pulpit Harbor on Vinalhaven one sunday with wonderful winds and a great picnic, thanks to Jill and Heather. After Rockland, Chuck and Lynn headed to Boothbay, for an Island Packet Rendevous...get-together of common boat owners...where we met a great bunch of folks and learned a great deal about the boat.

We loved sailing up the Sheepscot river to Wiscasset, where Heather was finishing her job. After a short stop in Portland and shopping at this colorful boat junk shop we headed south out of Maine to the rest of New England.
